In Memoriam

We commemorate with deep sadness and fond memory colleagues who left us much too young. Their contributions and service to the firm and its clients are part of their enduring legacy. We miss them greatly and continue to be inspired by their talents, judgment, and dedication.





Phillip L. Robinson, 1947 - 2022

Phillip Lysle Robinson was a founding partner and later senior counsel at Ludwig & Robinson from 1999 until his passing in 2022. He practiced in the areas of corporate, banking, and international law, advising companies and financial institutions on corporate formation, acquisitions, financing, and restructuring transactions, and on the legality and structuring of offshore currency, tax, and banking transactions. He served as regulatory counsel for commercial, savings and investment banks before the Office of Comptroller of the Currency, FDIC, and Federal Reserve, and as legislative counsel before members and committees of both houses of Congress, and as an expert witness on money laundering.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Mr. Robinson graduated with honors from Whittier College in 1971. Following a stint on the professional tennis tour, and a master’s degree from Cornell University in 1974, he became a professor of political science at Cornell, Northwestern, Oberlin, and Williams. He obtained his J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 1986, where he taught annual courses in international finance and banking law for 20 years as an adjunct professor of international law. Meanwhile after entering private practice at a prominent national firm, he became a principal at Ludwig & Robinson for two decades, spending later years in retirement in his native Arizona.

Mr. Robinson also served as counsel to the American Political Science Association, counsel to the Navaho Tribe, and guardian ad litem for children in abuse and neglect cases before the District of Columbia Superior Court.





James E. Tompert, 1954 - 2019

James E. Tompert was of counsel at Ludwig & Robinson from 2010 until his sudden passing in 2019. His practice focused on complex commercial litigation and arbitration in federal and state trial and appellate courts across the country. He represented banks and other financial institutions, businesses, insurers, and individuals in the areas of business disputes and torts, insurance defense, directors’ and officers’ liability, shareholder derivative actions, securities fraud, civil RICO, bankruptcy, foreclosure, real estate, professional negligence, and personal injury.

A native of Michigan, he graduated from Duke University in 1976 and earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1981. He was admitted to the bars of the District of Columbia, Maryland, Michigan, Virginia, and the United States Supreme Court.

After practicing much of his career in Washington, DC, Mr. Tompert returned to Michigan where he served as the firm’s Detroit office and became recognized as among Michigan Top Lawyers.
